As part of the future Tramway Express de l’Ouest Lyonnais [Tramway Express of Western Lyon] (TEOL) project, the team was selected, alongside WSP Engineers, OMA, Marco Rossi Paysagistes, and Les Éclaireurs, as winners of the competition for the construction of a crossing structure linking La Balme de la Mulatière to the Confluence district.
This new structure includes a 200-metre crossing of the Saône, with a main span of 78 metres and two independent decks: one for the tramway and the other for pedestrians and cyclists. It features a cable-stayed footbridge over the Jean Couty aquatic garden on the left bank and a pedestrian route on the right bank, connecting Confluence to La Balme. The project also encompasses the architectural design of tunnel portals and urban developments, aiming to ensure continuity with the city and legibility of the route for users.
Within this context, the intervention as heritage architects focused on the reactivation of the historical path identified during the heritage analysis, which transformed the project’s initial objectives: from a simple crossing, it became a new urban connection within Lyon. Attention was given to the coherence of the design with the identity of the territory crossed, while respecting site constraints and contemporary uses, and supporting the design team in coordinating technical, landscape, and urban aspects.
