The mission concerned the spaces dedicated to the reception of the public, and the related facilities necessary for their proper functioning in the National Monuments. These places could be located within the Monument itself or nearby. Each situation involved specific links between the existing architecture—acknowledged for its heritage value—and the installations required for visitor reception. In all cases, particular attention was given to the preservation and enhancement of the heritage, as well as to improving the visitors’ perception and understanding of the sites open to the public.
The architecture of the visitor reception facilities is sober, pure and rational. One of the main objectives was to ensure that the installations for welcoming the public would not interfere with the clarity and legibility of the Monument. A reflection was also carried out on the place and integration of signage to facilitate orientation and information as clear and intuitive as possible.
Beyond the reception areas and product sales, the project also addressed the issue of organizing these spaces as workplaces for the staff of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux. The design of these areas focused on the quality of the working environment. Conditions within the monuments can be particularly challenging in terms of comfort—light quality, temperature (especially due to large volumes), and drafts are recurring concerns.
The overall reflection on the layout of visitor reception spaces brought together a multidisciplinary team of architects, designers, engineers, and construction economists. The design concept for the shops aimed to define a strong and coherent visual identity consistent with the CMN’s values, adaptable to the spatial configurations and the products displayed, and extending beyond the shop itself to include ticketing areas and exhibition spaces.
Completed projects :
– Visitor reception and shop at the Château de Champs-sur-Marne
– Visitor reception at the Villa Cavrois in Croix
– Ticket office and shop in the barbican of the Château Comtal in Carcassonne
– Visitor reception and shop at Mont-Saint-Michel
– Ticket control, Arc de Triomphe, Paris
