‘Caring for and Rehabilitating – Continuing Architectural Legacies’
The exhibition ‘Ordinary Modernity’ highlights the shared heritage of the buildings that form the backdrop to our regional identities. Much of this architecture was built in the second half of the 20th century, or even earlier. In light of contemporary challenges, we regularly question how obsolete these buildings have become and often condemn them on the grounds of their excessive energy consumption. Yet they are not without their merits, the foremost of which is simply that they are there. Construction emits greenhouse gases due to the materials it uses and the natural resources it draws upon.
Should we not, then, question the tendency to always want to replace old buildings with new ones?
What if existing buildings could be seen as a resource?”
