Let’s shift to a li(v)able world

The agency’s twenty-sixth workshop focused on Tanguy Descamps’ ecological commitment, explored through his book Basculons ! Dans un monde vi(v)able. The reading sparked reflection among team members and helped collectively sketch pathways to ensure a livable world. The book provides a practical contribution to the agency’s approach, highlighting experiences and ecological transition practices that can be applied to projects and built environments.

Descamps’ interest in ecology dates back to his thesis work, particularly on renewable energies. His “tipping point,” as he calls it, came after reading Guillaume Pitron’s La Guerre des métaux rares, which made him realise that purely technological solutions are insufficient to address the ecological crisis and that infinite growth in a world of limited resources is unsustainable. This understanding has shaped both his personal and professional commitment and continues to guide his ecological work today.

In 2019, he joined the La Bascule movement, a network of people sharing ecological awareness and active engagement. There he met Maxime Ollivier, and the idea for Basculons ! was born. The book brings together thirty testimonies from young people aged 18 to 35, recounting their journeys of awareness and engagement, complemented by seventeen texts from experienced ecological transition actors. This intergenerational perspective values the experience of older practitioners while providing guidance and advice for younger generations.

Today, Descamps focuses on education and raising ecological awareness, which he describes as a “cultural battle.” His aim is to legitimise all forms of engagement so that they become standard practice. He advises those wishing to act to inform themselves thoroughly about the ecological crisis to understand its complexity and to work within a collective to carry out projects, emphasising that concrete solutions can only emerge through collective action.
